About Visy

In 1948, Visy started out in Melbourne as a manufacturer of corrugated cardboard boxes. From these modest beginnings, it has since grown to become one of the world's leading packaging, paper and recycling companies.

Now, Visy employs over 5,500 staff and operates in over 120 sites across Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam and trading offices across Asia, Europe and the USA. Visy also has a ‘sister’ company, Pratt Industries USA, which employs a further 3,500 staff in North America.

In 2013-14 Visy produced more than 730,000 tonnes of fibre packaging, 494 million steel food cans, 1.5 billion beverage cans, 823 million beverage cartons, 2.2 billion plastic containers and 1.8 billion plastic preforms. In the same year Visy recovered over 1.6 million tonnes of paper and cardboard, 265,000 tonnes of glass, 90,000 tonnes of plastics and 30,000 tonnes of metals to be recycled and ultimately given a new life.

 

The Challenge

Visy recognises the importance of identifying, training and developing our company's best people to take our business to new heights. As such, Visy run a Future Leaders Development Program, which is attended by around 35 of our emerging leaders each year.

The Future Leaders Development Program has been developed specifically to Visy's requirements and is designed to assist the participants transition from Operational Management to Strategic Leadership.

The first step for the Future Leaders Development Program is for participants to understand, reflect on and analyse their existing skill set and workplace behaviours. Once the participants have a clear picture of where they are, they are encouraged to come up with strategies to capitalise on their strengths and to develop action plans to work on the areas identified for potential improvement.

 

Testgrid Solution

Testgrid were engaged by Visy to conduct 360 Assessments for the Future Leaders Development Program participants. A 360 Assessment involves an individual rating themselves in a number of key performance areas; the individuals Manager, Direct Reports and Workplace Peers also rate them in the same areas. The results of these assessments are collated and used to identify the individual's strengths and development areas.

The Future Leaders Development Program participants, along with their Managers, Direct Reports and Workplace Peers, were able to complete their assessments using Testgrid's easy to use online assessment platform.

The use of Testgrid's online platform meant that assessments could be easily completed at a time convenient for the participants, from a multitude of locations throughout Australia and overseas. The participants were supported through the assessment process by Testgrid's Account Manager and Support Team, who solved any technical issues and ensured that project timelines were adhered to.

Once the Future Leaders Development Program participants had completed their assessments, they received an individual debrief on their results from one of Testgrid's qualified Organisational Psychologists. These debriefs included detailed analysis of the assessment results and discussion of strategies that the participants could implement to maximise their strengths and improve on their development areas. To maximise the relevance and impact of the debriefs, Testgrid aligned the competencies that were discussed with Visy's existing Competency Framework.

To further support the participants, Testgrid's Organisational Psychologists made themselves available for addition ad hoc support and coaching once the debriefs had been completed (at no additional cost).

Through their commitment to communication, Testgrid were able to seamlessly link the 360 Assessments to the rest of the Future Leaders Development Program; ensuring continuity of themes and language with the rest of the program delivery team.

 

The Results

The 360 Assessments provided the Future Leaders Development Program participants with a wide range of insights into their performance. Some of the insights to come out of the 360 Assessments and corresponding debriefs were:

  • For 58% of the participants there was a significant overall difference between how they rated themselves and how they were rated by their peers
  • Overall, the participants underestimated their performance at work
  • Participants significantly underestimated their ability to ‘Think Innovatively’ and ‘Manage Performance’, these are Key Skill Areas for Visy
  • 75% of participants significantly underestimated their performance in at least one of their Key Skill Areas
  • 83% of participants significantly overestimated their performance in at least one of their Key Skill Areas

These insights (at an individual level), help candidates to fully understand their current strengths & weaknesses and develop strategies & goals that will take their performance to the next level.
