About Brain Awareness Week

Testgrid are proud to support Brain Awareness Week. Celebrated every March by organisations across the world, Brain Awareness Week (BAW) began in 1996 as a modest effort involving just 160 organisations in the United States. Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives (DABI) organised the first BAW to bring together diverse groups with different interests from academia, government, professional and advocacy organisations. The goal was to unite them with the common theme that brain research is the hope for treatments, preventions, and possible cures for brain diseases and disorders and to ensure a better quality of life at all ages.


Brain Awareness & HBDI

One of the most amazing parts of the human body is the brain, we all have one, we just each use them differently. There are many different ways to understand the brain and how it works, one way in particular is referred to as “Whole Brain® Thinking”. Research on the brain has led to an understanding that each and every one of us has a preferred way of thinking that affects the way we collect and process information. The awareness of individual thinking preferences and the thinking preferences of others, along with the dexterity to act outside individual thinking preferences is known as “Whole Brain® Thinking”.

The HBDI (Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument) assessment developed by William “Ned” Herrmann was derived from the “Whole Brain® Thinking” model. This assessment measures thinking preferences of individuals, teams, and organisations. The data helps us adapt our thinking preferences to communicate effectively, improve decision making and problem solving.

After completing the survey, teams will need to attend the HBDI workshop facilitated by an accredited consultant where they will receive their comprehensive HBDI® Profile report that includes in-depth interpretation of the results, reference material about the Whole Brain® Model, comparison data, and activities for further exploration and development.

Created for a business environment, Whole Brain® Thinking is a methodology designed to help thinkers, teams and organisations better benefit from all of the thinking available to them. It acknowledges that while different tasks require different mental processes, and different people prefer different kinds of thinking, organisations will get better results when they can strategically leverage the full spectrum of thinking available.


Example: Green Police Officer and Red Citizen. Red Citizen says to Green Police Officer (crying) “Sorry officer, I feel really bad can’t you let me off this once?” A ‘red’ question because it is from the feeling’s quadrant. Green Police Officer to Citizen “No, you broke the road rules and deserve a ticket”. A ‘green’ response because it’s about procedure.
